At the end of June 2009 there were 13,800 operating businesses in the NT, or 300 less than at the same time in the previous year.
The vast majority of these were small businesses, with 59.1% of the total being non-employing businesses and a further 33.8% of the total employing from 1-19 employees.
NT had the highest proportion of businesses employing 20 or more employees in the nation at 7.0%, followed by Tasmania and the ACT both recording 5.2%.
Do you know how many businesses operate in your state?
The ABS counts the number of businesses operating in the Australian economy, including rates of business entries and exits and business survival. These data are sourced from the ABS Business Register. They show the number of operating businesses by employment size at the end of June in each financial year and only include businesses which actively traded in goods or services during the reference period. Due to changes in scope, these counts are not directly comparable to previous data releases.
More detailed counts are available from the ABS website by industry, main state and territory, type of legal organisation, institutional sector, employment size ranges and annual turnover size ranges.
